Platinum A' Design Award Winner Transforms Lake Living with Unique Architectural Approach

The Modern Lodge is a testament to the innovative design approach of KEM STUDIO. Drawing from the owner's experience as a commercial photographer, the design concept captures the experience of lake living in a still photo. The house is composed of two simple platonic forms, one resting on the other, creating an aperture to the lake. The breathtaking view is only revealed upon entering the house, leaving behind the city's hustle and immersing the residents in the serenity of lake living.

What sets the Modern Lodge apart from other residential designs is its unique spatial configuration. The main public space is a wood-clad, two-story volume filled with natural light and the captivating lake view. This is contrasted by a crisp, white stucco volume housing the private functions. Large boulders unearthed during construction connect the house to the land, maintaining the lot's natural essence. As one descends toward the lake, the house becomes a backdrop, completely disconnecting from the city.

The design project was a collaborative effort between KEM STUDIO and the Walsh Family. The result is a residential house that not only serves as a functional living space but also as a testament to the owner's creative process.
